Let’s talk… candles

In “Let’s talk…” we explain the differences between the materials, products and product categories you can find in our store versus in “mainstream” stores. Because which options are more sustainable? And what makes these options the fair choice? In this post: Let’s talk candles!

MAINSTREAM CANDLES

PARAFIN

Most candles are made of paraffin, a by-product of petroleum. By buying paraffin, you indirectly support the fossil fuel industry. Paraffin candles release toxins which are harming the environment and your own health. On top of that bleach is used to give the candles a white colour.

OUR CANDLES

RAPESEED WAX

This plant-based wax has a very low carbon footprint since it is fully grown in Europe. It is natural, non-toxic, renewable and biodegradable. Besides that, no natural environment needs to be destroyed for this wax.

SOY WAX

Soy wax candles are sustainable, vegan and biodegradable. They burn twice as long as paraffin candles and have 90% less black smoke formation.

PALM WAX

Our palm wax candles are all made of RSPO-certified palm oil. This means employees enjoy humane working conditions, good wages and free health care. Besides that, the candles are sustainably produced under the condition that no valuable forest may be cut down for palm oil.

CANDLES IN HET FAIRE OOSTEN

All types of candles that you now probably only know in a version with paraffin can be found in our collection in a sustainable version. We’ve got different styles of dinner candles, pillar candles, scented candles and even tea lights. All candles are made of one of the sustainable alternatives to paraffin, like rapeseed, soy, certified palm or bee wax. For the scented candles natural fragrances are used.
